A Look Back: The AOL and Time Warner Merger

With the beginning of the millennium came one of the biggest mergers in U.S. history. The popular Internet service provider, America Online, merged with media mogul Time Warner. The merger was the result of the rising digital media market.

Unfortunately, while Time Warner continued to reap profits from the film, music, and television industry, AOL struggled to develop a sustainable business model in order to stay relevant in a shifting culture. Noted by PBS in 2009 as “one of the biggest failures in merger history,” the two companies later split.

Sometimes forecasting the future can be difficult, and with a business in an ever-changing industry, it can be difficult to say if a merger will be right for a company in the long run. With an uncertain future, being up to date with the latest news and trends can help to give a business owner guidance as to whether a merger is right for their company.
